Traditionally, braille books are printed/punched on blank white paper – this is a very solitary reading experience for people. However, for both the Grade 1 and Grade 2 braille versions of our children’s picturebook, we worked with www.pia.co.uk to print colour copies of the original dyslexia friendly book with the braille is punched onto clear acetate sheets which are interlaced between the colour pages of the book. The result is that people who experience sight loss are able to read the books together with family and friends who may not have visual impairments.
We have also produced a more traditional braille version of the audio description, along with an eBraille version for those that have eBraille readers.
To help ensure the braille books are available for free to those who need them, we have partnered with ClearVision: they are a postal lending library of children’s books designed to be shared by visually impaired and sighted children and adults. They lend books all across the UK and Ireland.
